Congratulations to Runze Zhang for presenting, Identifying Incoherent Search Sessions Search Click Fraud Remediation Under Real-World Constraints, at the 46th IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy :)
As advertisers lose billions of dollars annually to click fraud, existing detection methods struggle against increasingly sophisticated bots. Our research introduces a novel approach based on the insight that legitimate users conduct coherent, topically-focused searches, while bots often generate random and incoherent query sequences. The paper presents CoSeC, a system designed to quantify a search session’s “incoherence index” by analyzing literal semantics, temporal patterns, and ad-click behaviors. CoSeC was evaluated on real-world search traffic and successfully identifies fraudulent sessions with 95.79% precision and 92.40% recall, demonstrating its effectiveness for click fraud remediation.
